Hawthorne Bridge by Daogreer Earth Works
I had a plan.

I was going to photograph all eleven of Portland's bridges in a single morning. I planned out my route, bridge to bridge. This took some finagling, since I wanted to stop where I could take a photograph without crossing the bridge. I got up well before sunrise, and my plan seemed to be going off without a hitch. I started at the Sellwood bridge, and got a few pre-sunrise shots I thought were pretty good, at least from what I could see on my tiny camera screen.

Then my plan derailed. There was construction around the Ross Island bridge, so I couldn't make it to my designated picture taking spot. Then the fog rolled in. I made it as far as the Hawthorne bridge (above) before the fog was too thick to see any bridges at all. I continued driving from bridge to bridge in hopes of a clear patch, but I since I couldn't seen any of the bridges through the fog, I had no idea if my directions to near-the-bridge-without-crossing-the-bridge were even accurate.

Someday I'll complete my quest, but I'll have to wait for the perfect fog-less construction-less day.

I am reminded of the quote that sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees. While you had a goal in mind of getting all the bridges (wow!), you were held back by the fog, which probably was quite frustrating. However, you were provided with the opportunity to capture a beautiful image in the early morning light and fog. Very nice!
I had a photography teacher who once said that we must remember to always turn around when we were photographing, so that we didn't miss what was behind us, as that could be even better than what we were looking at. How wonderful that you took the time to shoot the bridge rather than going home in despair of completing your goal!

Amazing shot! Fog is one of my favorite things to shoot in but mine have never come out quite like that. (Found you via gypsy mama, btw. I'm also in the Portland area.)

Sounds like an ambitious plan, good luck with it. This first bridge shot is stunning. The red lights and the pink of the sunrise tinged fog creates a surreal image. Nice capture.

«Louis» has been across this bridge a number of times.

Your drivng route may not have worked for you, but it did work for a great photo. Love the perspective, colours and fog, water reflection and lighting!

The bridges in Portland are so beautiful. Even though your quest was cut short you captured this one perfectly.
