I'm participating in the first week of Photo Feedback on Mom Tried It. The purpose of this particular blog hop is to give and receive feedback about photography. This chicken photograph is my entry. This is a friend's chicken. I had a hard time getting one of them to stay still long enough (there were three of them), and it wasn't just a fast shutter speed issue; they were in and out of the frame before I could compose the shot most of the time. So, this was my best attempt.
Please critique my photograph! Tell me what you think I did well, and what you think I could have done better with this shot. Even if you don't know anything technical about photography, you can still give me some feedback. I look forward to reading it!

I think this is a beautiful shot - I love the DOF, it must have been pretty tricky with chickens moving as much as they do! I'm not an experienced enough photographer myself to say what you could have done better, I think it's great!

I love the idea of this Photo Feedback challenge! I'll try to participate every week. Getting feedback is so valuable.

To me this seems technically so perfect. The composition is great, cropping just fine, and the depth of field lovely. It's like the chicken is posing for you in this image. - This is why my improvement suggestion is with the editing; do you think you could sharpen it just a tiny bit, and maybe give it more contrast? Although I don't really know whether the picture needs it, but just a suggestion!
Great shot!!

I think this is lovely. I still can't believe you were photographing three chickens. That is a huge feat to even try that. They may be the only worse than a toddler. ;)
I really love the depth of field. I think the bokeh is just fantastic. I agree with Ansku and think the look you might be going for could be achieved post processing. I know we all want to get it done in camera, but in this case I don't think technical adjustments would have really changed it too much. Her tips about the sharpness and contrast should really make this shot pop and become one of those "wow" shots. I don't know if it is my new uncalibrated monitor or if the shot is a little too warm. The white balance seems just a tad off.

But all around a fantastic shot. Chickens are very hard to capture. You did great.
Thank you so much for joining in. :)

Thanks for these suggestions! Keep 'em coming!

I have sharpened this photo quite a bit, and I don't know how much more is possible without it looking over-processed, but I can try a few more things.

I actually had a copy of this one printed, and they fixed the white balance for me, which annoyed me because I didn't like it as much at first. Maybe I need to go back and look at the "fixed" photo with a different eye.

I think this shot is great! I love the warmth, and am very impressed with how sharp and close it is considering your moving target! Well done!! The only suggestion I might have would be to maybe frame the shot so the negative space is more on the right so the chicken is looking toward it instead of out of the frame, but I'm sure that is a tall order considering how hard they are to capture in the first place. Overall I think it's a fantastic shot and I really love it. Great work ;)

Love the colors and detail on her face. I also like the obvious craziness going on in background. I have never seen a chicken that close!

I love the colors and the bokeh (great depth of field). I really like the composition, too. It's a really great picture!

This is a great shot! Your focus is spot on the eye and your depth of field created a nice bokeh. I agree with the comments about post processing, but I would look to increase the contrast a bit - Try to make the dark colors closer to black. Really quite nice!
