So Let it Rain​

​Before it was desecrated, Mt. Rushmore was called Six Grandfathers by the Lakota People. ​Mt. Rushmore keeps rearing its ugly head(s). The faces of mostly racist white historical figures are literally carved into a mountain that was part of land illegally seized from indigenous people. I'm pulling all designs that feature the monument.

Essentially qualifying as fan art, this is a character I do not own, even though the paining is mine.

​Nothing wrong with this one in particular, except that it simply isn't very compelling as a piece of art. Interestingly, this is the only one of these four that I no longer have the original piece, because someone actually bought it!

​This design is likely available through Friends of Outdoor School somewhere, but even if it isn't, it wasn't that good to begin with. The world will survive without access to this design.

​Winning design for the Friends of Outdoor School contest commemorating Outdoor School's 45th anniversary. The letters are made up of the 4 field study logos, and small on the S, it says "Hands-on Science Since 1966"

This design is now available directly through Outdoor School's Redbubble Shop. Proceeds support the Student Leader Scholarship. 

November 2012
This design commemorated the temporary demise of the Namanu Outdoor School site. It has been unavailable for some unknown quantity of time and is also no longer relevant.

After mostly ignoring my art for a few years, I have come back to it in preparation for a re-launch. I have no huge exciting hopes for this re-launch; I have come to realize that I enjoy my own photography, but clearly nobody else does (or at least not enough to buy it).

That's not what this post is about, however. In preparing the new public face for my photography, I have revisited some of my other art. Some if it is absolutely worthy of being kept around and kept public because it is completely mine and completely benign.

Others art is not. Some of my art of the past depicts historical white-people-things that have caused disenfranchisement and pain to various people and cultures.

1. Get Real

After years of doing this same project, we finally advanced beyond scratch foam. The pro of scratch foam was that is was incredibly cheap, which is always a plus for public schools, but also it was cheap enough that students could make mistakes and start over several times. Their second print could be wildly different from their first print after they had learned the process.

With carved rubber blocks, there was much less room for error. Students could only minimally modify their block between their first and second printings. Still, I think the students enjoyed the carving process more than the scratching process.

Each photograph was paired with a haiku, written by the student. Almost every square inch of the school is already covered with murals and art installations, but there was this little spot outside one of the doors of the classroom. 

We painted the walls dark grey and installed snap frames that can be loaded from the front, so these images can be swapped out with art from students in future years. For now, they contain these incredible macro photographs along with haiku poetry.

The space above the door was painted with chalkboard paint so a project title and explanation could be added with each new project displayed in the space.
