Night Lights: Constellations Simplified
February 16th, 2012, Portland OR
Star charts can be confusing and intimidating to the average person. Many want to be able to identify constellations when they see them, but getting started can seem like learning a foreign language. Lafcadio Adams's new e-book, Stargazing for Beginners: How to Find Your Way Around the Night Sky, makes learning to identify constellations in the northern hemisphere easy by starting small, and using landmarks in the sky like a road map.
A lot of great information is already out there, but sometimes too much is too much. Most star charts and software want you to know your longitude and latitude, and the month and hour you will be observing the sky. Adams eliminates everything you don't need to know to get started. To use her e-book, you need to know "it's summertime" and "it's dark and I'm still awake."
The decision to release Stargazing for Beginners as an e-book was a practical one. It's easier to learn about the stars when you can see them—when you can check your work. The book can be loaded onto an e-reader, tablet device, or smart phone and then taken outside where the stars are. Change the device settings to white text on a black background, and reduce the brightness of the screen to keep your star-seeking night vision intact. With the smart phone option, you can practice even when you weren't expecting to; you can step out of a restaurant, realize it's a clear night, and look for constellations right there in the parking lot.
Lafcadio Adams has been an environmental educator for over 10 years, but has always enjoyed teaching astronomy best, because the questions people of all ages have about the universe are so interesting. "It's my plan to get as many humans as possible to start to understand the universe, so we'll have a leg up when the aliens attack," Adams joked.
Stargazing for Beginners: How to Find Your Way Around the Night Sky by Lafcadio Adams is available now at Lulu.com, Amazon.com, Google eBookstore, and GoodReads.com, and will be available soon at Barnes and Noble and Apple's iBookstore.

Lafcadio has a scale model of the solar system in her living room, and it has been there longer than most of the furniture (since way back when Pluto was still a planet). Lafcadio has been teaching her fellow Earthlings about the various wonders of nature for over ten years, but her favorite subject to teach has always been astronomy. Lafcadio spends most of her time in the Pacific Northwest sleeping, avoiding the sun and learning to make things.
