Distant Glow
In the eerie depths of tidepools, invertebrates fascinate with their alien tendrils.

Moon Jelly
Prey to sea turtles and sunfish, the Aurelia aurita sifts a variety of plankton from surface waters.

Candy Shop
Clinging to the side of a piling, this celery-colored anemone stretches its tendrils in search of food - or maybe companionship?

Strung Out
How is it that they do not get tangled? These jellies find themselves intertwined, and float about in their slow dance until they are freed.

Orange Squish
These sessile beauties paralyze their prey with neurotoxins - don't get too close!

Absolutely Crabulous
The Metacarcinus magister, or Dungeness Crab lives off the shores of my favorite coast. This little guy was named after Dungeness, Washingon, he is the state crustacean of Oregon, and this photo was taken in California. Seafood Watch has given Dungeness Crab a Sustainable seafood rating of "Best Choice," so go ahead and chow down.

Spicules of Solitude
Native to the west coast of North America, the Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, or California purple sea urchin, is an important member of the kelp forest community. What have you done for your kelp forest lately?

Ondrej's Field Trip
This hermit crab was a bit shy, but he finally... uh... came out of his shell for this photo shoot. He's quite handsome, if I do say so myself.

Sea Sprouts
This anemone photograph has always reminded me a little bit of a salad. Wouldn't want to eat it though... It took a few tries to get this photo just right - would you believe it, the anemone wouldn't sit still! Silly sessile creature...

Marlin's Timid Son
A tiny clown fish takes refuge in an anemone. This was a difficult photograph to get; the little guy was afraid of the camera. I finally got him, though.

All Star
You are no match for the tube feet of this charismatic echinoderm... as long as you sit still long enough. Nothing in a tide pool seems to have a face, and yet we gravitate toward sea stars anyway.

High Five
Is it possible to high five something with no hands and radial symmetry? Well, you can try anyway. At the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a child stretches up the glass in an effort to reach a Chrysaora fuscescens, or Pacific Sea Nettle, swimming serenely above.

Reach
An illuminated haven for a clown fish, the tendrils of this anemone contain toxic nematocysts, keeping predators away.

Wiggle Mortis
This little bottom dweller moves about by wiggling. One couldn't really call it swimming; it just wiggles from one part of the sea floor to another.

Start Here
Stuck to the glass in an aquarium, this pentaradially symmetrical echinoderm shows off his... belly button...

Find Nine
Not very far beneath the ocean's surface, you can find such a diversity of life that virtually all other biomes pale in comparison. This bright orange anemone peeks out from behind a rock, and dares you to look deeper.

Crimson Digits
This deep orange anemone lurks in the deep, dark tide pools of your soul - it is still, and yet alive.
