Last time for Murietta365's SOOC challenge, I posted a photograph taken with a 35mm film SLR. I thought I'd dig even deeper in to the archives for this one, taken with a 35mm film point and shoot, and a broken one at that.
I didn't know it when I took this shot, or the rest of that roll, that there was something wrong with the camera. I think there was a slowly increasing light leak somewhere. This was one of the first shots on the roll, and subsequent shots included ever-increasing strangely over-exposed shapes on the final prints. This one escaped with only a mildly hazy over-exposed feel to it. I like it because it gives the shot a dream-like quality (matching my memory of the place) that I probably couldn't have done on purpose if I tried. This is a completely un-edited shot, and you can see dust specks from when it was scanned who knows how long ago, and a scratch on the print. I spent 9 summers on this lake, and this image certainly brings back memories. I can hear in my mind the sounds of paddles gently tapping and scraping the sides of those plastic kayaks as kids tooled around in them exploring the lake. I can remember where every large rock is in that swimming area, and exactly where the deepest and shallowest parts are. I can smell those Ponderosa Pines, and I can feel the texture of the "grass" (not really grass, but it served the same purpose) in the meadow in my fingertips. The flavor of the juice we always requested whenever we cooked meals over an open fire is unlike any other, and the image of the stars we would gaze at as we fell asleep each night, framed by the starburst-shaped clusters of pine needles sticks with me to this very day. I could go on, nearly indefinitely, but these are my memories, and probably not as interesting to you as your own. Leave a comment and tell me about a time in your past when you can remember with all five of your senses, with your whole being, every detail of an experience. What was your favorite part (if you can choose)? Which tiny detail had you forgotten about completely, but through the process of remembering the whole picture, came back to you as clearly as though you were there yesterday? 3/5/2011 07:23:03 am
Beautiful photo and a lovely, stirring story. You have certainly evoked all the senses very nicely here. Hazy and dreamy for sure! This reminds me of our canoe trip last spring to the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey. I enjoy your memories. Unfortunately, I enjoyed our canoe trip, but I also recall my children's complaints (too boring said my boys, too long said my daughter). 3/7/2011 04:21:55 am
I love the dreaminess of your photo - wonderful capture for wonderful memories!
This is an absolutely beautiful photograph, and I so enjoyed reading your post. I am quite sure that the thing I remember most vividly with all five senses, was the birth of my son. Somehow, I remember most clearly on his birthdays. I so love spending the whole day reliving it. 3/7/2011 11:07:27 am

I love this post and how you captured so much in that one memory. 3/8/2011 07:09:55 pm
The lovely hazy effect creates a dreamlike sheen over this beautiful scene! Well I think that the faulty camera has actually produced a nice gentle polaroid effect. I like the way the light is catching the yellow canoes. And you asked about memories - coincidentally, for me all of my most vivid in every sense would be to do with water, mostly endless days spent playing down on the beach with my brother and a friend who lived along the bay. Now I think about it, those times were like something out of an Enid Blyton novel. Quite idyllic. I love the dreaminess of your photo. It made me think of some past photos we have in our albums that are treasured memories. Its amazing what memories a picture can bring to mind and the senses that can be reawakened. Thanks for sharing your picture and wonderful story. 3/11/2011 12:15:17 pm
A film photo! It's a terrific one, too! It looks like what I would call a 'high lake' in the mountains. Probably the only time I truly experience with all my senses is when I'm out in the woods somewhere; however, I did have some interesting experiences when visiting NYC last year! Comments are closed.
