Culture and Conflict, Volume 11: What does it all mean?

Culture, 6th Grade:

Each student completed a reflection on their design. The assignment for the design was to create an abstract representation of some element of their culture that they had discovered through the process of investigating the elements of culture in the project. Where you live determines how you live, education, religion, government, recreation, food, shelter, family structure, etc...

This student is a dancer. The box represents choreography, and she is doing more than the choreography, creating her own dance style, and letting go. The squiggles represent power and coming out of the box. Different types of dance and physical expression are apparent in different cultures throughout the world.

This student is the rocket ship. The moonscape where the rocket ship resides represents his known universe, and the four stars nearby are his four biggest adventures. The 6 stars out in the unknown, in space (not all visible in this picture), represent each of the years he has left before his culture deems him an adult.

This design is a person looking up at a skyscraper. The student wants to become an architect, and a building that he designs someday may become something that people will see and remember. Skyscrapers reflect culture / where you live / how you live in that if you live in a crowded city, the only direction new buildings can go is up.

The Hagia Sophia and Turkish flag on this piece of art represent this student's Turkish roots. The moon and star above the Hagia Sophia parallels the symbolism on the flag. This student recognized the role of religion and symbolism to the Turkish people, and how those ancient traditions are carried on in the culture today.

The door opening to the world represents a book, because books open doors with whole new worlds inside. This student reflected that she has time to read, she is able to read, and if she couldn't read, this particular door would be closed to her. Part of this student's culture is that she values reading.
