Winter Berries

I eat berries almost every day. Not these, of course, but there were quite a few birds that were enamored with them when I happened upon this tree.

Finding berries in the middle of winter can be challenging. Fortunately, frozen berries work better in smoothies anyway. The Portland Fruit Company offers frozen local berries, even in winter. My freezer is currently full of local blueberries, raspberries, and marionberries.

My best guess is that this tree is a Washington Hawthorn. The leafless trees (there were 4 or 5 of them on the same block) had so many berries, it looked as though the dozens of birds congregating in the vicinity would be able to feast for weeks.

I saw nothing so majestic and picturesque as a Cardinal surrounded by fresh snowfall (it's supposedly a "snow day" today, but cold windy rain is all we're getting), but it was a lovely sunny (cold, windy) day on that day, which made for some lovely contrast against the unusually cloudless sky.
